The 5 Levels of Stakeholder Engagement

Effective stakeholder engagement takes a project from an information session to a co-created venture that delivers real impact. Stakeholders’ interests are usually within a range of 5 levels. Project leaders should meet stakeholders where they are and attempt to increase their level of interest.

Unengaged: Stakeholders who are unaware or apathetic to the project

Resistant: Stakeholders who are aware but are opposed or have a negative disposition towards a project

Neutral: Stakeholders with no disposition and may have limited interest

Supportive: Stakeholders are interested in the project and provide their support to the team

Leading: Stakeholders are involved to the greatest extent and advocate for the support of the project amongst others.

S.A.I.D. Strategy helps organizations intentionally move up this ladder so that stakeholder engagement is a disciplined practice that drives execution, learning, and long-term alignment. We know the value of prioritizing stakeholder relationships and aim to provide that insight to our clients while keeping their organization’s culture in mind.
